Of course, when talking to children about death it is important to consider the most appropriate language to do it. Definitely, it is fundamental to talk about death with children to avoid that it becomes a subject adults do not mention the causes and consequences. The conversation with children must be simple, clear and in general terms, without going deep on details. It is important to make them know death is a natural stage in the life of human beings, all animals and plants, and that they can make any question about it.<\/p>\n
Children have a great capacity to understand death, even though adults refuse to talk about it. The ideal is to start talking with a simple vocabulary and let the children bring examples from their own experience, what they have seen in films or read in short stories. At the age of four or five years old, children may interpret death as something we can escape from with intelligence. However, after the age of six or seven years old the children realize that death is irreversible.<\/p>\n
In order to clear any doubt and avoid wrong interpretations it is necessary to make children understand that a dead person can not breath, eat or suffer anymore. It is also vital to give them the chance to express in their own words and make any question about death. The conversation must be open and based on confidence. The children must be able to understand that death makes the family feel sad and that it is normal to see the relatives cry. Since little kids take every word literally, it is recommended not to use phrases like: \u201cwe have lost a relative\u201d or \u201cour loved one has gone far away\u201d, because the children could feel hopeful about the return of the deceased and it is not true. A simple way to explain death to children is by indicating them that the body of the person who died was not working well and doctors were not able to repair it. Children can understand it very clearly and it will help them not to keep hope concerning the relative who died or his return. Children must also know they can keep in their mind and heart the memories of the deceased with love and respect.<\/p>\n

Los adultos se hacen la pregunta de si deben o no conversar con sus hijos acerca de la muerte, sin darse cuenta de que se relacionan con el hecho de alguna manera cada d\u00eda. La muerte est\u00e1 en los noticieros, en los videojuegos, en los cuentos infantiles. El tema de la muerte no es ajeno a los ni\u00f1os y j\u00f3venes. Por supuesto, para hablarles de ello es preciso tomar en cuenta su edad para determinar el lenguaje m\u00e1s apropiado para hacerlo. Es importante hablar de la muerte con los ni\u00f1os para evitar que se convierta en un tema del que no se mencionan causas, consecuencias. Claro est\u00e1, la conversaci\u00f3n con los ni\u00f1os debe ser sencilla, clara y general, sin ahondar en detalles. Hacerles saber que la muerte es una etapa natural de la vida en seres humanos, animales, plantas y que puede preguntar lo que desee.
Se debe tomar en cuenta que los ni\u00f1os tienen una gran capacidad de comprensi\u00f3n de este tema, m\u00e1s all\u00e1 de que los adultos no quieran hablar de ello. Lo ideal es comenzar con un leguaje sencillo, permiti\u00e9ndoles dar ejemplos de lo que ellos han visto en pel\u00edculas o le\u00eddo en cuentos. A los cuatro y cinco a\u00f1os es posible que interpreten la muerte como algo de lo que se puede escapar con inteligencia. Sin embargo, despu\u00e9s de los seis o siete a\u00f1os los ni\u00f1os se dan cuenta de que la muerte es irreversible.
Para no dejarlos en la duda o en interpretaciones equivocadas es preciso hacerles entender que al morir la persona no respira, no come, no sufre. Adem\u00e1s, darles la oportunidad de que se expresen y pregunten todo lo que necesiten sobre la muerte. La conversaci\u00f3n debe ser abierta, basada en la confianza. Los ni\u00f1os deben tener claro que la muerte genera un sentimiento de tristeza en la familia y que es natural llorar. Debido a que los ni\u00f1os asumen cada palabra de forma literal se recomienda no utilizar frases como: \u201chemos perdido a un familiar\u201d o \u201cse ha ido lejos\u201d, pues albergar\u00e1n la esperanza de que vuelva y no es as\u00ed. Una forma sencilla para explicar la muerte, por enfermedad o por un accidente, es indicando a los ni\u00f1os que el cuerpo de la persona ya no funciona y que los m\u00e9dicos no han podido repararlo. Esto es sencillo de comprender y les evitar\u00e1 tener esperanzas respecto al familiar que ha muerto.
